Since October the Sierra Resource Conservation District (SRCD) Firesafe and Fuels reduction team has walked over 150 acres performing assessments for voluntary participants in the Shaver Lake area. The California Fire Safe Council awarded SRCD last year to see through their commitment to address the tree mortality crisis through offering landowners an opportunity to have their property evaluated for fire safety and stewardship. The product is a property assessment report that educates and informs landowners with recommendations and best practices to harden their home, create effective defensible space, and conduct stewardship of their precious forest resources. The SRCD firesafe and fuels reduction team is constantly evolving; modeling successful programs in other parts of the country, gaining new tools to perform better assessments, providing additional resources, and leaning on the knowledge and experience of the many partners committed to the health and well being of our forest and forest communities. The team is expected to continue all throughout 2020, with 400 landowners already invited to participate.
