The Sierra Resource Conservation District attended the Grower Recharge Workshop hosted by the Madera/Chowchilla Resource Conservation District on Wednesday, July 13th, 2022. The workshop took place in a walnut orchard in Chowchilla, California. The farmer previously had completed orchard recycling and will soon incorporate on-farm recharge.
On-farm recharge is applying available water to farmlands and recharging the groundwater system with the applied water. Flooding farmlands and building recharge basins or ditches are three ways you can complete recharge on a farm. On-farm recharge occurs during wet years or after rainstorms when water availability is high and water storage is low.
The Grower Recharge Workshop hosted various speakers who relayed the importance of on-farm recharge, land subsidence, and aquifer depletion to the producers in attendance. Also mentioned was the NRCS Pilot Recharge Program, which will assist farmers with an on-farm recharge project in the Madera and Tulare Counties.
The speakers in attendance include:
- Joe Choperena, Sustainable Conservation
- Jesse Roseman, Almond Board of California
- Kristi Robinson, Chowchilla Management Zone
- Douglas Welch, Chowchilla Water District
- Wendy Rash, NRCS State Water Quality Specialist
- Priscilla Baker, NRCS Madera
- Chase Hurley, Tranquility Water District
- Mark Hudson, Event Host
The Sierra RCD Agriculture and Rangeland staff enjoyed this event and appreciated the great speakers who attended to talk about a vital practice valley farmers can apply to their farm. We encourage all farmers to attend events similar to the Grower Recharge Workshop hosted by the Madera/Chowchilla RCD, as most events are free and provide valuable information for any farm.
