In the month of December, Sierra RCD worked with two Southwest Fresno farmers, Al Smith and Al Mays, for two impactful planting days aimed at enhancing local agriculture and promoting pollinator health. Al Smith, known for his pistachio farming, and Al Mays, who grows a diverse range of mixed vegetables such as leafy greens, beans, and peppers, opened their fields to the Sierra RCD team.

Together, they worked on planting a hedgerow designed to attract and support pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, which are essential for crop production and biodiversity. The plants used in the hedgerow were sourced from the Xerces Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to pollinator conservation.

The event provided valuable hands-on education for everyone involved, offering participants an opportunity to learn about sustainable farming practices and the importance of pollinator friendly initiatives. The hedgerow planting is a small yet significant step toward ensuring a thriving ecosystem on the farms, benefiting both the land and the local community.

Sierra RCD looks forward to continuing partnerships with local farmers to promote sustainable practices that enhance the health and productivity of agricultural lands in our region.
