Storm Season Safety and Preparedness
While winter and spring storms can bring much-needed rain and snow to Fresno County, they also present serious hazards, including flooding, landslides, power outages, and road closures. Whether you live on the valley floor or at higher elevations, it’s important to prepare for severe weather to protect yourself and your property.
How to Stay Prepared
Before the Storm:
- Sign Up for Alerts: Stay informed with emergency notifications from the Fresno County Office of Emergency Services and Sheriff’s Department. Sign up here: https://member.everbridge.net/453003085614497/new. Also, ensure Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are activated on your mobile phone.
- Assemble an Emergency Kit: Have at least three days’ worth of food, water, flashlights, batteries, medications, and warm clothing.
- Prepare Your Home: Clear gutters, secure outdoor items, and trim trees to prevent wind damage.
During the Storm:
- Avoid Flooded Roads: Never attempt to drive through flooded areas.
- Stay Indoors During High Winds: Keep away from windows and avoid unnecessary travel.
- Be Ready for Power Outages: Keep phones charged, have extra blankets, and use generators safely if needed.
After the Storm:
- Inspect Your Home for Damage: Check for roof leaks, fallen trees, and structural damage.
- Report Hazards: Notify local authorities of downed power lines, road closures, or flooding.
- Drive Cautiously: Watch for debris, weakened roadways, and hazardous conditions.
